Supporting Large Scale Overlay - Multicast applications

چکیده
Recent proposals in multicast overlay construction have demonstrated the importance of exploiting underlying network topology. However, these topologyaware proposals often rely on incremental and periodic refinements to improve the system performance. These approaches are therefore neither scalable, as they induce high communication cost due to refinement overhead, nor efficient because long convergence time is necessary to obtain a stabilized structure. In this paper, we propose a highly scalable locating algorithm that gradually directs the overlay newcomers to a set of closest nodes without inducing high overhead. On the basis of this locating process, we build a robust and scalable topology-aware clustered hierarchical overlay scheme, called LCC. We conducted both simulations and PlanetLab experiments to evaluate the performance of LCC. Results show that the locating process entails modest resources in terms of time and bandwidth. Moreover, LCC demonstrates promising performance to support large scale multicast applications.

A Scalable Hybrid Overlay Multicast Architecture for Large-Scale Applications
We propose a two-tier overlay multicast architecture to efficiently support large-scale multicast applications. In this architecture, overlay multicast scheme is adopted in the backbone domain, while application-layer multicast protocol is responsible for the communication between the limited number of end users in access domains. Our two-tier architecture is able to provide efficient resource ...

In this paper, we propose a Two-tier Overlay Multicast Architecture (TOMA) to provide scalable and efficient multicast support for various group communication applications. In TOMA, Multicast Service Overlay Network (MSON) is advocated as the backbone service domain, while end users in the access domains form a number of small clusters, in which an application-layer multicast protocol is used f...

This paper introduces a flexible new method of constructing hierarchical multicast structures suitable for supporting large-scale GRID applications. Hierarchical multicast trees are constructed by repeated application of clustering algorithms that partition the members of a large application community to form a layered hierarchy of clusters of users. The hierarchies are examples of application ...

Network bottlenecks, firewalls, restrictions on IP Multicast availability and administrative policies have long prevented the use of multicast even where the fit seems obvious. The confusion around multicast poses a problem for large-scale pub/sub-based applications that need blazing speed even across WAN networks. There are a number of multicast protocols, but none is universally available. Th...

Growing demand for use of Internet/Web-based services in large scale real-time distributed virtual simulation (RT-DVS) and other real-time applications is fueling extensive interest in overlay multicast protocols. These applications require many-to-many multicast services that are not available as an open Internet service today and are not likely to be offered as an Internet-wide service in the...
